Hailing from the coastal town of Jan Juc, Emma’s journey into the world of surfing came from playing in the waves along the surf coast. Reflecting on her community, Emma notes, “I reckon down here they’re not quite underground, but it’s definitely understated how good they are.” She attributes much of her progress to the high standard of local surfers, particularly the abundance of male surfers in the water. In fact, she’s been known to dash off straight after a contest, forgoing the trophy ceremony to attend to her family responsibilities—a testament to her priorities and grounded nature.
Beyond her own pursuits, Emma is a passionate advocate for the benefits of sports, particularly for children. “I think sport is awesome for kids,” she asserts. “It gives them confidence; you don’t have to win.” Drawing from her own childhood experiences in swimming, Emma emphasises the role of sports in building self-assurance and resilience in young individuals. She believes that involvement in sports not only fosters physical health but also instills important life skills and values, reducing the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors later in life.
